Murals
For those of you living within the Toronto to Simcoe County region who want to add a unique decorating feature in your home, you can commission one of my custom murals.
These are all hand painted images: castles, nursery rhymes, forests full or furry creatures or whatever you desire for any room in your house or office.
Pricing depends on the complexity of the piece, size and logistics of room.
I can use your reference material and create something special just for you in my style.
I use latex and acrylic paint for my murals.
See the "Ordering/Contact Info" page to request a free consultation within my region.

Below is Janet working with 2 other artists on the set mural for the HBO production "Grey Gardens": The production went on to win an Emmy for Art Direction. The mural was used in the titles sequence at the beginning of the film. My boss referred to it as "your mural." How exciting for me!

Janet Carmichael can take you anywhere in the world with one of her murals.
Carmichael, a scenic artist who has worked on a number of Canadian films, is using her skills to turn homes and offices into original pieces of art.
Recently, Carmichael was set loose on a baby's nursery.
"They told me they wanted a Mother Goose theme and I just went with it,", she said. "I worked in a number of nursery rhymes, the Cat and the Fiddle, Humpty Dumpty and, of course, Mother Goose."
The nursery room took three weeks to complete, during which time Carmichael developed a close relationship with her clients. Getting to know her clients, Carmichael is able to add personal touches to any mural, making them one of a kind.
"In this nursery, I added the family dog as part of the mural," she said. "Their dog has a unique tail, so it's not just any dog. It's their dog. In the Mother Goose corner, I chose to include animials that the children will discover on their own property. I thought that would be nice for them and then their parents can discuss them with them."
Carmichael is a graduate of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, completing post-graduate training in England. She has been selling her paintings, exhibiting in galleries and working on films since graduating.
The price for one of Carmichael's murals varies depending on the size of the piece and how long it takes her to complete it.
Carmichael says she enjoys turning her clients' rooms into another place and time.
"It's one-of-a-kind decorating. I make it a personalised room. Yes, it will cost more than wallpaper or paint, but it makes that room truly yours," she said.
Client Natalie Wiersma, who is expecting her first child, is the proud owner of the new Mother Goose room and called Carmichael's work "exceptional."
"I told her we wanted classic Mother Goose characters, not Disney cartoons," she said. "And Janet just ran with it. I can't believe the way she was able to incorporate so many different stories. Every time I go in there I find something else on the wall I haven't seen before."

Janet Carmichael sees any blank interior wall as her canvas. Give her a paint brush and free rein of your space and the long-time artist will transform a boring bathroom or uninviting livingroom with one of her mural masterpieces.
"I draw designs freehand and hand-paint everything. I don't use commercial stencils and I won't copy someone else's work," the Barrie resident and professional mural artist says.
The avid painter's latest clients encouraged her to put on her thinking cap and gave her carte blanche to create a baby's room with and old-world nursery rhyme theme for their first child.
"That room took me three weeks; the couple didn't want the stereo typical Disney-themed baby's room," Carmichael says.
"They wanted all the walls covered in specific stories and I had to incorporate scenes from each. After I walked in the room, I could picture where they would all go and then decided I would transition the images into a flowing story."
Walking into the nursery, your eyes are immediately drawn to a playful scene from Hey Diddle Diddle, the Cat and the Fiddle, where Carmichael has painted a life-like fiddle-playing cat and a dish and a spoon running past it.
Mary and her little lamb play in a green pasture on another wall, while the closet wall depicts Humpty Dumpty taking his fall off a wall that looks to be made of real stone.
And it doesn't stop there.
"I thought, 'If we had Humpty, we needed all the King's Horses and Men riding out of the castle to save Humpty,'" Carmichael says. "My mind's always going when I do these things, deciding if a mural needs something else."
Carmichael has made a career out of painting and says creating works on a life size scale is an art in itself. Perfecting the craft, she says, can take years and loads of patience.
"Murals require a different kind of paint technique; you use different brushes and paints," Carmichael says. "It's a totally different trade (from oil painting) and having your work turn out right takes years of trial and error. It's not just a case of taking a couple of art courses to do this."
"I've been an artist all my life and I'm a scenic painter of backgrounds for movies and films," she adds. "I've been at that seven years and have learned a lot of technique and how to make paint do what I want it to do."
Carmichael pictures herself making mural art more of a full time business. She just needs interest in it to pick up a bit more.
"I hope that mural art will become a bigger business for me. It's quite neat being paid for something I dream up and paint for clients. And it's a wonderful thing to see them so pleased at something I did."
Carmichael said she will normally serve clients living in Barrie or no more than an hour away.
